ISBN, Bar Code, Copywrite
Just by doing the leg work, spending around $185 gives you the right, priveledge and freedom to sell your book anywhere, any time to anyone and not give up any of your rights! We think that the most misunderstood aspct of self-publishing is the ownership of an ISBN book number. Misinformation abounds on the Internet on this subject. Here it is: Every book that is, or is going to be sold commercially (in stores like Borders, or online at places like Amazon, must have an ISBN book number -- period. If you are selling from your own site, or just to friends & family, or doing your own 1 person book signing at a fair or show... then... YOU DO NOT NEED AN ISBN OR BAR SCAN! *NOBODY can assign, give, lend or sell you an ISBN except for the US agency, RR Bowker. Only $29.95 per UPC Bar Code If you already have an ISBN you may want to try this company. These folks offer to make you a bar code for any product you want. NO Registration Fees NO Hidden Costs Visit Mozian & Associates, Inc TODAY! Do you have to register to be protected? No. In fact, registration is voluntary. You have a copyright from the moment the work is created. But... for a mere $35 you e-file and we hope that you will want to register to protect yourself. You have to be registered however, if you are infringed and wish to bring in a lawsuit of a U.S. work. Only registration establishes a public record of the copyright claim. The U.S. Government's copyright web site notes: "Before an infringement suit may be filed in court, registration is necessary for works of U.S. origin. If made before or within five years of publication, registration will establish prima facie evidence in court of the validity of the copyright and of the facts stated in the certificate. If you make sure that the registration is made within three months after publication of the work or prior to an infringement of the work, statutory damages and attorney's fees will be available to the copyright owner in court actions. Otherwise, only an award of actual damages and profits is available to the copyright owner. A registration allows the owner of the copyright to record the registration with the U.S. Customs Service for protection against the importation of infringing copies." *This is just another protection of your rights. With so many reasons for going through the official registeration of the copyright when you self publish a book, some say its better than being blessed by the Pope. It simply is another protection of your rights. You may not know it but, a copyright protects original works of authorship which is not the same as a patent which protects inventions or discoveries. copyright laws do not protect ideas and discoveries, although they seem so much alike. Then again, a trademark protects words, phrases, symbols, or designs, but only those identifying the source of the goods or services of one party and distinguishing them from those of others. For example: John has a great idea for a product that will harness 50% of the light emitted from a normal 100 watt bulb and can be used like a flash light that will work for hours without batteries. John needs a patent. Then John thinks up a cool slogan for his invention. Now John needs a trademark. Finally, John wrote a book about how he thought up this gizmo, named it and how it helped him become a millionair. Yes, now John needs someone to print his story and will need a copyright! If John wants a bookstore to sell his book he will need the ISBN number so it can be found amid the other trillion million guzillion books on the market. He may decide to or not to include a price in the printing of the covers, but he just might want a barcode so the big city store can scan it and know what to charge and who to pay. You do not have to have them right now! John did, Jane soon did... You should... eventually. We are fine with whatever you want to do!
